Replacing a Worn-Out String Inverter

For homes in the Falcon Field area, solar panel repair usually means replacing a string inverter that has reached the end of its life. String inverters handle the whole array's power in one box, often mounted on a garage or side wall, and years of heat take a toll on their fans, capacitors and relays. Panels typically outlast them by a wide margin.

Signs it is time

  • The inverter shuts off on hot afternoons and restarts later
  • It shows the same fault code repeatedly after resets
  • The fan is loud or has stopped
  • Production has fallen steadily even though the panels are clean
  • The manufacturer no longer supports the model or sells parts

Choosing the replacement

A like-for-like replacement keeps the design simple. If part of your roof gets shade from trees or a neighbor's second story, moving to optimizers or microinverters can recover output, but it is a larger change. We explain the trade-offs and give you a written scope. A replacement that changes the inverter type or capacity usually needs a permit from the city and, for SRP customers, a change request with as-built drawings through SRP's PowerClerk portal.

About the area

Falcon Field broke ground on July 16, 1941, about six miles northeast of what was then Mesa, as the No. 4 British Flying Training School. Royal Air Force cadets trained there until the end of World War II, and the city bought the field for $1 afterward. Today it sits at 1,394 feet with 646 based aircraft as of 2017, and Boeing builds and maintains the AH-64 Apache next door. Mesa adopted the Falcon Field Sub-Area Plan in April 2007, which includes architectural character policies for the north-central part of the city.

Placement and heat

When we replace an inverter, we look at where it hangs. A unit in full afternoon sun runs hotter and ages faster. A shaded wall or a simple cover helps.

Older systems and newer rules

If your system has been in place for many years, the paperwork may be thin. We document what is on the roof, including panel model and count, string layout and existing inverter, so the drawings for a permit or a utility change request are accurate. Where the inverter connects to the house, we also check the breaker, labels and disconnects, since some of those requirements have changed over time and a replacement is the moment they get looked at.

Dust and the airport

An active airfield, construction along the freeway and open lots all add dust. After a replacement, a cleaning helps you see what the new inverter can really do.

Falcon Field Questions

Can you replace my inverter with the same model?

If it is still sold, yes. If not, we choose a compatible unit sized for your array and explain whether that counts as a modification.

Will a new inverter increase my production?

If the old one was derating or shutting down in heat, yes. A new inverter does not make the panels themselves produce more than they can.
