Finding the Fault in the Wiring

Solar panel repair in Lehi often means chasing a wiring problem. A system that trips its inverter on sunny afternoons, shows a ground fault, or loses one whole string usually has a damaged cable, a corroded connector or water in a junction box somewhere between the panels and the inverter. Finding it takes testing, not guesswork.

How we trace a fault

Read the inverter's fault history to see when and how often it trips
Isolate each string and measure voltage, current and insulation resistance
Walk the array and inspect connectors, cable runs and conduit
Open junction and combiner boxes to look for heat marks or moisture
Repair or replace the damaged section and retest the full system

Why wiring fails

Rooftop cables live in sun and heat for years. UV exposure breaks down insulation that was left loose on the roof instead of secured under the panels. Connectors that were not fully seated or were mixed between brands can loosen and overheat. Rodents and birds chew insulation. Each of these can cause a ground fault, which tells the inverter to shut off for safety.

The neighborhood

Lehi predates Mesa itself. Mormon settlers led by Daniel W. Jones arrived in March 1877 and called the settlement Jonesville or Fort Utah; it was renamed Lehi in 1883 and annexed by Mesa in 1970. It is bounded by the Salt River on the north and the Consolidated Canal on the south, with part of Loop 202 running through. The city lists Lehi as a Heritage Neighborhood, an honorary designation rather than a historic district, so it does not carry the Certificate of Appropriateness review that applies inside Mesa's designated districts.

Canals, river and critters

The river bottom and canal banks on either side of Lehi are home to wildlife. Rodent damage to rooftop wiring is something we look for on every visit here, and when we find it we can add mesh guards after the repair so it does not happen again.

Utility paperwork

A wiring repair that restores the system to its original design is not usually a modification. If we need to change inverters or reconfigure strings, your utility may need updated drawings. Call (602) 833-7492 and tell us what the inverter is showing.

Lehi Questions

What is a ground fault on a solar system?

It means current is leaking somewhere it should not, often through damaged insulation or moisture. The inverter shuts down to protect the system and the home, and the leak has to be found and repaired.

Is it safe to keep resetting my inverter?

If the fault returns, stop resetting it and call. Repeated ground faults point to damage that should be found and repaired.
