Small Inverters, One Under Every Panel
Microinverter Replacement is a different job from a string inverter swap, and in Mesa it comes up often. A microinverter system puts a small inverter under each panel instead of one big box on the wall. That design has real advantages: shade or a fault on one panel does not drag down the others, and the monitoring can show you exactly which panel is having trouble. The tradeoff is that every inverter lives on the roof, under the hot back side of a panel, where it is harder to reach.
How to spot a failed microinverter
The monitoring app is the best tool. A failed unit shows as one panel, or one small group of panels, reporting zero or far less than its neighbors. If every panel suddenly goes blank at once, the microinverters are probably fine and the problem is elsewhere: the gateway, the internet connection, a breaker or the AC wiring. That distinction matters, because a gateway problem can often be fixed from the ground.
Warranty first
Microinverters usually carry longer warranties than string inverters. EnergySage lists 25 years for Enphase and Hoymiles and 10 years for APsystems. So even an older Mesa system may still have covered units, including ones put in by an installer that has since closed. Most manufacturers ship a replacement part but do not pay for the labor to install it. We check serial numbers, file the claim, and quote you only the labor and anything not covered.
Getting to the unit
Replacing a microinverter means lifting or partly removing the panel above it. On tile roofs, that means planning a path so we do not crack tile on the way. Because each trip to the roof has a fixed cost, it pays to replace every failed unit in one visit. If several units are close to failing, we will show you what the data says and let you decide whether to replace them now or wait.
Discontinued models
Older microinverters are sometimes no longer made. When a direct replacement is not available, the new unit has to be compatible with the panel, the rest of the units on the same circuit and the gateway. Sometimes that means a small group of units must be changed together. We check compatibility before ordering and explain the options.

Typical Microinverter Replacement Costs
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Inverter replacement, string or micro (Fixr) | $1,000 to $3,000 |
| Inverter not communicating (Fixr) | $500 to $3,000 |
| Solar labor, per hour (Fixr) | $80 to $120 |
National figures from Fixr. HomeGuide notes microinverter replacement runs 15 to 25 percent more than a string inverter swap. Ranges vary with how many units fail, warranty coverage, roof type and model availability. Your written estimate is the price.
How a Microinverter Swap Goes
1. Find the failed units
We use the monitoring data and a roof check to confirm which units are down.
2. Check warranty and parts
Serial numbers go to the manufacturer, and we confirm a compatible replacement.
3. Replace on the roof
We lift each affected panel, swap the unit and reconnect it.
4. Commission and verify
New units are added to the gateway, and we confirm every panel is reporting.

Microinverter Replacement Questions
Is a microinverter failure urgent?
Not usually. One failed unit takes only one panel offline, so the rest of the system keeps working. It is still worth fixing, because that panel produces nothing until it is replaced.
Why did all my panels stop reporting at once?
That is usually a communication issue, not a mass failure. The gateway may have lost Wi-Fi or power, or a breaker may have tripped. Check that the gateway has power and internet before assuming the worst.
My installer went out of business. Is the warranty gone?
Usually not. Microinverter warranties are issued by the manufacturer, and the installer closing does not cancel them. Labor is the part that typically is not covered.
Can I mix old and new microinverter models?
Sometimes, depending on the brand and gateway. Some newer models cannot share a circuit or gateway with older ones. We check before ordering.
